How the Background Remover works
The Infinity Image Background Remover finds the main subject of a photo with an AI segmentation model and makes everything else transparent. High quality uses BiRefNet on your graphics chip (WebGPU), or IS-Net on devices without a recent one; Fast uses the small U²-Netp model. They all run on your own device with ONNX Runtime Web, so your image is never uploaded.
Example: for a 4000 × 3000 product photo, the AI looks at a 1024 × 1024 copy and returns a mask that says how likely each pixel is to belong to the product. The mask is enlarged back to 4000 × 3000 and becomes the transparency of the original pixels, so the result keeps the photo's full resolution. Save it as PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The Infinity Image Background Remover runs entirely in your browser, so your image never leaves your device. The first time, your browser downloads the AI from our site (about 140 MB for High quality with a recent graphics chip, about 75 MB without one, about 30 MB for Fast) and keeps it for next time. Which photos work best?
Photos with one clear subject, such as a person, a pet, a product or a car, that stands out from the background by colour or focus. Busy scenes, glass, smoke and wispy hair are harder. If an edge looks wrong, try the other quality setting and compare with the slider before you save.
How long does it take?
After the first download, Fast takes a second or two. High quality takes a few seconds with a graphics chip; without one it runs on the processor, which took about 10 to 20 seconds for a photo on a desktop PC in our tests and can take longer on phones. The size of your photo hardly matters, because the AI always looks at a copy of the same size.
Which file formats can I use?
You can open JPG, PNG and WebP images, and most other images your browser can show. Save the result as PNG (keeps transparency, best quality), WebP (keeps transparency, smaller file) or JPG (no transparency: the background you chose, or white). Images over about 16.8 megapixels are reduced to 4096 × 4096 pixels or less first, so the tool also works on phones.
